Preventing the Drowning of Young Children

There are many articles on drowning and drowning prevention on the internet these days, but one of the best articles on layers of protection around aquatic facilities is by The National Drowning Prevention Alliance.

The article is so truthful and complete, I will not add anything to it but my high recommendation that you read it for the safety of your children, your students, your family and friends.

BIGGEST MISTAKE PARENTS MAKE FOR THEIR CHILD'S SAFETY

We borrowed this from Swim Lessons University but it is well worth your time to watch the video!

One of the BIGGEST mistakes parents make from a safety perspective is not giving their child the opportunity to continue learning how to REALLY SWIM! By the time a child is 5 years of age, he is capable of swimming the length of most any re...sidential pool using formal strokes such as freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke. As a physical educator, I strongly encourage parents to have their children participate in a variety of sports and activities--BUT NEVER as a substitute to becoming a competent swimmer. If your child is five years old and can't swim freestyle with side breathing (as seen in this video), please twice about re-prioritizing his or her activities. http://youtu.be/VIXbsOVC1_

In an age of ethnic conflict, fatal disease and chronic malnutrition, it seems strange to stumble across figures such as this: 388,000 people die every year from drowning, according to the World Health Organization. To put this number in perspective, drowning accounts for nearly one in 10 deaths worldwide. It is the third-leading cause of unintentional death. It is also the greatest cause of injury and unintentional death among children younger than 5 in both the United States and Asia. This is a problem that traverses the developed and developing worlds......

Think You Know What Drowning Looks Like?

Think you know what drowning really looks like? Do they call out every time? Splash like crazy? No, unfortunately not. Drowning can be silent. It is why so many drowning happen in the home with no one even aware that there is a problem. Want to learn more? Go to this link:

Think Safety Even In Cooler Months!

Even though the weather is cooler now and some feel winter is just around the corner, drownings are still possible. Parents are encouraged to be aware of environments that drownings can happen in even during fall and winter months. Some areas of concern for drowning of children are:
*Bathtubs
*Toilets
*Mop buckets
*Wells
*Ice covered ponds

Drowning is not limited to pools and lakes during the warmer months. They can happen year round.

Although our swimming academy is seasonal, we want everyone to be aware of the fact that safety around water is always on our minds. When we come across an interesting fact or article on swimming or water safety we will be posting on our blog this winter.

Also, remember to keep checking for the posting of classes in February for summer of 2011!
